Creating an entire music streaming system with Sonos
Sonos is a wireless multi-channel music listening system that converts digital music from selected online streaming services as well as music libraries on computers connected to your home network. Moreover, some Sonos products can also access music through a physical connection, such as with a CD player, iPod or other sources, and transfer it to other Sonos devices in your home.
Sonos allows you to create “zones” around the house to listen to music. The zone can be a unique device in the room, or it can be an area of your home, or it can be any combination of Sonos devices in your home. A “zone” is created when you select one or more devices to play the same music at the same time.
If you have more than one Sonos, you can group them all or choose any combination of devices to create a zone in the living room, bedroom, kitchen, cash or even outdoors. Or, you can play the same music in all your zones at the same time.
How the Sonos system transmits music
Sonos receives music that flows through its home network and / or the Internet. This means that the Sonos player must be connected to your home network router. If Sonos is simply connected to your wired or wireless home network, as well as any other portable media, this would be the end of the discussion. The Sonos system, however, works differently because the idea behind Sonos is that you can have an entire home network working together, not just with one device.
Creating a Sonos network
To create an entire home music network using the Sonos network, you must start with at least one Sonos device connected to your home broadband router to access streaming music sources. This connected device creates a separate Sonos network on which all the Sonos devices you add can communicate with each other and the Sonos application (more on that later). The Sonos device can be connected to your home network routers using an Ethernet cable or WiFi. Regardless, the first connected Sonos player becomes the gateway for all other players to receive music. It must be emphasized that the Sonos network is a closed system. In other words, only Sonos products are compatible with the Sonos network.
You cannot use Sonos to stream music to Bluetooth speakers or stream music from your smartphone using Bluetooth on Sonos players. However, there are ways you can integrate Airplay with Sonos, with the addition of AirPort Express or Apple TV.
How the Sonos network works Sonos uses a unique network (Sonosnet).
The advantage of using this type of network setup is that it does not interfere with or slow down Internet access or the ability to play audio / video content on smart TVs, computers or other devices around your home that is not part of the Sonos setting. This is because the wireless signal for the Sonos system works on a different channel from the WiFi network on your home network. The Sonos network automatically sets the channel, but can be changed if there is interference. Another advantage is that all devices within the Sonos network are in perfect sync, which is important if you have multiple devices or zones. Each device in the Sonos network repeats the signal it receives from the network gateway connected to the router.
This is usually called an access point.Setting up and managing your Sonos system To set up a Sonos system or add devices, simply use the controller app (available for iOS and Android) combined with pressing a key combination on your Sonos device. That’s all there is – with just the app and at least one Sonos, the network is set up. Apart from the volume keys and mute buttons, most Sonos devices do not have control buttons. The players are completely controlled separately. But the control options are numerous.
Sonos can be controlled by a program (application) on a computer, an application for iPad, iPod, iPhone, Android phones and tablets. The application allows you to select a music game and where you want to play. Using the app’s control options, you can stream music from Sonos-available streaming services or other compatible sources with any Sonos devices you have. It is important to keep in mind that while some streaming services are free, many require a subscription or listening fee. While you can start playing music on any one device right away, the controller app makes it easy to group any combination of devices to play the same music on more than one player at a time.
Play music from one service or source in your kitchen and your upstairs office while playing a different source in your bedroom. Use the controller app to set alarms and timers to play music on any of your players. A bedroom appliance can wake you up to music in the morning, and a kitchen appliance can play internet radio every day when you get ready for work. Any piece of Sonos can be controlled anywhere in your house. If you carry a smartphone with you that has the Sonos controller app, you can play music on any of the devices at any time. Every compatible Android or iOS device can have a Sonos controller app, so every member of the household can control any Sonos. If you prefer a dedicated remote control, the Sonos control is compatible with Logitech Harmony remote controls and the Sonos PlayBar and PlayBase are compatible with select TV, cable and universal remote controls.
Sonos Players
To listen to music using the Sonos system, you need one Sonos device that can access and play the music being transferred. There are four types of Sonos Player.
